TONSILLOLITHS/ TONSIL STONES EXPLAINED

Image
There are many Tonsils in the human body.  The ones we commonly refer to the Tonsils are the palatine Tonsils which are paired organs in the throat, just behind our teeth. The Tonsils are one of the body’s primary organs for maintain immunity. They are strategically located at the entrance of the food and air passage and so work against both airborne particles as well as food antigens – thus performing a regional immune function. Since they are directly involved in catching and killing viruses and bacteria, they need as large a surface area as possible. In order to increase the effective surface area of the tonsils there are deep crevices in the palatine tonsils called crypts. These narrow channel mucosal surfaces have an immunogenic function. FORMATION OF TONSILLOLITHS Sometimes food particles, saliva, along with bacteria getting trapped inside the crypts of the tonsils. The usual cause of tonsilloliths to form are –           Previous recurrent to...

THE AIR WE BREATHE •Molecules in the air include primarily nitrogen and oxygen as well as water, carbon dioxide, ozone, and many other compounds in trace amounts - some of these are naturally occurring while  others the result of human activity. •In addition to gases, the atmosphere contains extras such as smoke, dust, acid droplets, and pollen. •The composition of the atmosphere changes constantly and depends on the season, weather, time of day etc. WHAT CAUSES  AIR POLLUTION ? Most of the air pollution results from the burning of fossil fuels, such as coal, oil, natural gas, and petrol/ diesel to produce electricity and power our vehicles.  Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a good indicator of how much fossil fuel is burned and how much of other pollutants are emitted as a result. AIR POLLUTANTS  are of three types •Gases •Particulate Matter Bacteria and Viruses  COMMON AIR POLLUTANTS  ARE •Carbon Monoxide •Ground Level Ozone •Lead •Nitrogen Dioxide •Particulate Ma...

ALLERGIC RHINITIS AND IMMUNOTHERAPY- SOME MYTHS

MYTHS REGARDING ALLERGIC RHINITIS In Allergen immunotherapy specific, semi purified allergen extracts are introduced into the body , with a view to hyposensitize the patient's allergic reaction. So that when the sensitizing allergen is subsequently or concomitantly encountered under ‘natural exposure’ conditions the patient’s immune system does not respond and symptoms of allergic rhinitis do not form.   Myth Number 1 – Allergic Rhinitis is a mild disease In a Europe-wide survey, two-thirds of AR patients reported at least one symptom that is severe enough to interfere with sleep quality, cognitive function, work productivity, school performance, psychosocial well-being or overall quality of life. Poor sleep is a particular problem. Valovirta E et all Myth Number 2 – Allergic Rhinitis remains the same throughout life Allergies change over time – the first change we may notice is in adolescence when allergies may become less prominent. There is also the ‘Aller...
